Assoc. Prof. Prokop Nekovář has passed away
We are deeply saddened to share the news that on June 18, 2025, Assoc. Prof. Prokop Nekovář, CSc., a long-standing figure of Czech chemical engineering and former Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering, has passed away. We owe him much for shaping the concept of chemical engineering education, research focus areas, and the organizational structure of our department as it exists today.
He graduated from UCT Prague in 1959, marking the beginning of his long and successful career as a chemical engineer, scientist, and educator. He started as an assistant in 1959, became a lecturer in 1962, and in 1991 was appointed Associate Professor in the field of Chemical Process Theory. His research focused on mass transfer in process equipment, particularly in liquid–liquid systems. He conducted both experimental and numerical studies of liquid–liquid extraction with and without chemical reaction, especially in systems important to hydrometallurgy, and investigated the impact of flow on mass transfer. He also played a key role in the development of a pilot plant and in the research of a novel vibrated extraction column.
From 1989 to 2000, he significantly shaped the future of the Department of Chemical Engineering through his work as Head of Department. In 2019, he was awarded the Emil Votoček Medal in recognition of his lifelong contributions.
We have lost a remarkable person and colleague.
We will never forget him.
