The Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT Prague aims to teach students in contemporary process engineering principles and prepare them for professional and dynamic growth along their life careers. The approach adopted by the Department of Chemical Engineering is to integrate the fundamentals of science and the principles of process engineering into multi-disciplinary teaching and research programs aimed at generating world-class graduates and internationally competitive research. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs stimulate student learning and development, with staff providing a supportive environment. Our programmes are all accredited with the Acreditation Organism of the Czech Republic. Students graduated from our department are very sought and occupy key positions in leading companies.  Industrial partners are a part of our team, contributing to bursaries and commissioning research.

The Department of Chemical Engineering has been a central cell of the University of Chemistry since 1950. Education, research and valorization are intimately linked and belong to the main activities of the department.

Education

The Department of Chemical Engineering offers in Czech language two bachelor, one master and one doctoral programs.  In English, the department offers bachelor programme Chemistry and Technology (specialization - Engineering) and  master programme Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering. With these programs the department provides education to approximately 300 students. Since education and research are intimately connected, students contribute directly to the research of the department. Students and staff are satisfied with the education programs and facilities.

The teaching at the Department of Chemical Engineering is focused on the following knowledge pillars:

  • Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering
  • Mass and Heat transfer
  • Hydrodynamic fluids
  • Process design
  • Separation Processes
  • Bioengineering methods

Research

The scientific staff of the department (including more than 50 PhD students and post-docs) is active in several research groups. The department gives freedom for interdisciplinary research, research within these groups. This distinguishes the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT Prague from other Departments of UCT Prague.

Valorisation

The role of the Department of Chemical Engineering is to conduct long-term, broad, world-class research and education on numerous carefully selected subjects that fall within the research profile of UCT Prague. The research matches the technological needs of the industry, which is especially present in the Czech Republic. This makes the faculty not only an incubator for leading research, but also permits for close collaboration with the industry.

History

Chemical engineering began to be taught as a subject since 1950 at the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague "UCT Prague" (former Institute of Chemical Technology), during Czechoslovakia republic period. In 1951 the Department of Operational Engineering which later became the Department of Processes and Apparatus and finally the Department of Chemical Engineering (ÚCHI) was founded. The credit for the establishment of this progressive field goes to prof. G.L. Standart and Prof. H. Steidl. Chemical Engineering has therefore a long tradition at the UCT Prague and is currently an integral part of the so-called Common Foundation for all study fields at the university.

"Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering"

Our Department of Chemical Engineering offers a two-year MSc programme in Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering that raises versatile engineers for a broad spectrum of industries such as chemical, biochemical, biotechnological, petroleum, food, energy, and environmental, or pharmaceutical. Our graduates are specialists in chemical engineering with the ability to communicate with team members having different expertise.

Our programme meets the highest European education quality requirements. It is accredited by the Ministry of Education, Youth, and Sports of the Czech Republic and fully complies with the European education requirements based on the Bologna process. The graduates of the programme earn an MSc degree in chemical engineering.

Prerequisitives for the programme:

BS degree in chemical engineering or a related field (process engineering, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, environmental engineering, chemical technologies, chemistry, physical chemistry, etc..). All students who have completed or are about to complete their bachelor studies in any related programme are welcome to apply.

Goal of the programme

The students undergo intensive engineering training to gain a strong foundation of chemical engineering and to develop independent and critical thinking to solve various (bio-)chemical engineering problems. The program graduates are versatile engineers sought in many not only engineering fields.

The programme builds on these 3 pillars:

(i) a thorough understanding of the underlying theory

(ii) teaching various engineering approaches, helping reach results when fundamental science becomes too difficult,

(iii) instilling the student with practical skills through laboratory and theoretical chemical-engineering projects.

The graduates of the programme are prepared to analyze chemical engineering processes, design chemical equipment, and identify optimal process parameters for the economical, safe, and ecological operation of chemical technologies.

František Plát

František Plát graduated in Chemical Engineering from University of Chemistry and Technology (UCT) in Prague. After defending his diploma thesis in 2007, he completed an internship at Daimler AG. He continued his research on automotive catalytic converters in the framework of PhD study. He has been working in Emission Laboratory Škoda Auto since 2011. He currently deals with Real Driving Emissions (RDE) measurement. Gradually, he built completely new competence and team of experts within Škoda Auto. Several other chemical engineers found employment in the newly formed working group. He actively develops collaboration with UCT by internships, PhD program and projects co-financed by Škoda Auto.
To study at UCT he notes: "Chemical engineering engaged me as an interesting combination of physical chemistry, mathematics, physics and common sense. Over time, I especially appreciate the fact that the study of chemical engineering provided me not only a lot of knowledge, but also a systematic approach to problem solving and a link to technical practice. Chemical engineering approach can be widely used in a number of other fields and directly leads to the application of IT tools for automation and algorithmization. PhD study at Department of Chemical Engineering is full time research work. PhD student is led to independence and management of his activities. Research projects often take place in collaboration with an industrial partner. The graduates are prepared for both careers in research and in industry."

Michal Svátek

Michal started his career with Hexion Specialty Chemicals (now Synthomer) in Sokolov in 2004 as development engineer for the acrylic monomers production. In 2006 Michal joined Six Sigma education program at the company and during his Black Belt certification he was running and coaching over 40 process and cost optimization projects for manufacturing plants located in Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.

In 2009 Michal joined an independent consultancy group based in Rotterdam. As an associate and crisis manager he led several restructuring projects for chemical companies in Central and Eastern Europe. During this time In 2009 Michal extended his focus from pure manufacturing to an end-to-end supply chain optimization.

Since 2014 he is a member of executive team at United Initiators, a world leading manufacturer of organic peroxides, persulfates and hydrogen peroxide with headquarters near Munich, Germany. Michal is responsible for leading a global supply chain consisting of streamlining raw material procurement, production planning and managing the distribution network. In his role he is looking after supply chain teams in China, France, Germany, India and USA and integrating recently acquired production sites in Turkey and Canada.

Michal holds master degrees in Chemical Engineering from Institute of Chemical Technology in Prague and in business administration from Economic University in Prague. Together with his wife and two children he is currently living in Munich, Germany.

"UCT Prague was the clear choice for me. I liked chemistry and math and even that time (1998) UCT Prague was considered one of the best universities in the Czech republic. Retrospectively it was the best option I could have chosen. During my master studies I spent two semesters at Kansas State University and one semester at Chemical Engineering University at Moscow. After graduating I continued on my PhD in Germany at Otto von Guericke Universität in Magdeburg.

With the chemical engineering background I had a very broad spectrum of opportunities how I could continue with my career.

I applied at P&G plant in Rakovnik because that was the best employer for graduates in Czech republic. My career took very fast path there and I quickly succeeded in several assignments – project manager, packing department manager or logistic department manager – acquiring new skills every day. The most crucial skills were communication, listening, leading teams or facing complex problems. My learning curve was very steep but it required a lot of effort.

After 3 year in P&G I was hired to Pepsico as a plant manager. It was again very challenging step but with great effort and will to learn and improve I was able to be bring a lot of value to the new employer and at the same time get a lot of new experiences and skills.

After another 3 years I have got other opportunity to lead family owned frozen bakery operation as manufacturing director in La Lorraine. I was hired to transform this small on effort based organization to place where we still value effort, but where we can rely on well-defined processes and structure. Under my governance we quadrupled our production volume to 100 thousand tons of bakery, pastry, Viennoiserie per year and we have grown to multiple site business, employing little less than 1000 people and going from negative profit to profit of tens of million Euro a year.   

Now with 8 years under my belt with La Lorraine and well balanced life (I am enthusiastic climber). I am looking for new challenges which life can cast on me."
