The Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT Prague aims to teach students in contemporary process engineering principles and prepare them for professional and dynamic growth along their life careers. The approach adopted by the Department of Chemical Engineering is to integrate the fundamentals of science and the principles of process engineering into multi-disciplinary teaching and research programs aimed at generating world-class graduates and internationally competitive research. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs stimulate student learning and development, with staff providing a supportive environment. Our programmes are all accredited with the Acreditation Organism of the Czech Republic. Students graduated from our department are very sought and occupy key positions in leading companies.  Industrial partners are a part of our team, contributing to bursaries and commissioning research.

The Department of Chemical Engineering has been a central cell of the University of Chemistry since 1950. Education, research and valorization are intimately linked and belong to the main activities of the department.

Education

The Department of Chemical Engineering offers in Czech language two bachelor, one master and one doctoral programs.  In English, the department offers bachelor programme Chemistry and Technology (specialization - Engineering) and  master programme Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering. With these programs the department provides education to approximately 300 students. Since education and research are intimately connected, students contribute directly to the research of the department. Students and staff are satisfied with the education programs and facilities.

The teaching at the Department of Chemical Engineering is focused on the following knowledge pillars:

  • Unit Operations of Chemical Engineering
  • Mass and Heat transfer
  • Hydrodynamic fluids
  • Process design
  • Separation Processes
  • Bioengineering methods

Research

The scientific staff of the department (including more than 50 PhD students and post-docs) is active in several research groups. The department gives freedom for interdisciplinary research, research within these groups. This distinguishes the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT Prague from other Departments of UCT Prague.

Valorisation

The role of the Department of Chemical Engineering is to conduct long-term, broad, world-class research and education on numerous carefully selected subjects that fall within the research profile of UCT Prague. The research matches the technological needs of the industry, which is especially present in the Czech Republic. This makes the faculty not only an incubator for leading research, but also permits for close collaboration with the industry.

History

Chemical engineering began to be taught as a subject since 1950 at the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague "UCT Prague" (former Institute of Chemical Technology), during Czechoslovakia republic period. In 1951 the Department of Operational Engineering which later became the Department of Processes and Apparatus and finally the Department of Chemical Engineering (ÚCHI) was founded. The credit for the establishment of this progressive field goes to prof. G.L. Standart and Prof. H. Steidl. Chemical Engineering has therefore a long tradition at the UCT Prague and is currently an integral part of the so-called Common Foundation for all study fields at the university.

The project aims to develop new superhydrophobic materials based on polyvinylidene fluoride and polymethyl methacrylate with different side chains for advanced microbioapplications. Liquid marbles (LM) based microreactors for cancer cell research and LM microabsorbers for selective separation of SO2 and CO2 from gas mixtures will be prepared from prepared nanoparticles and aqueous solutions. Polymer films with an anti adhesive hierarchical surface structure will be tested for the effective inhibition of biofilm growth. The comprehensive experimental characterization of new materials, including the relationship between the conditions of preparation and targeted modification, will be performed. Physico-chemical properties of materials will be determined together with toxicological analyzes of new materials. Obtained results enable to formulate conclusions about procedures and conditions of material preparation and effects of particular types of structures and modifications for the usability of perfluorinated polymeric materials including their impacts on biological systems.

The principal aim of the bilateral UCT-KRICT project is to prepare and use new superhydrophobic perfluropolymer materials for advanced micro and bio applications. Reaching of aim will be achieved by the synergistic actions comprising tailoring of size, chemical composition and structure, surface properties of polymer materials and their utilization for advanced micro bio applications. Furthermore, prepared superhydrophobic perfluorinated nanomaterials (in nanoparticles and flat film arrangement) will be used for advanced micro bio applications with 3D human tumor spheroids preparation and highly selective microabsorbers for SO2 and CO2 capturing from gas mixtures. Simultaneously, they will be tested to identify potential hazards to the environment, food chains and human health and biofilm prevention or inhibition.

The originality of our project lies in the connection of the fabrication and fundamental characterization of novel perfluorinated materials with enhanced properties (superhydrophobicity and hierarchical 2D and 3D structures) and their application for challenging tasks:

  • micro bio applications for the tumor cell 3D spheroids cultivation
  • unique micro gas absorbers for selective SO2 and CO2 capturing from gas mixtures
  • new superhydrophobic hierarchal flat films surfaces for active biofilm-prevention or -inhibition
  • toxicity of the prepared materials, handling risks and safety issues

The Parc

(Pharmaceutical Applied Research Center)

The Parc is a post-graduate program focusing on pharmaceutical research from discovery of new solid forms of active pharmaceutical ingredients to development of drug products. Specifically, The Parc is active in the areas of solid state chemistry and processes, preformulation and solid state analysis, drug product design and processes, biopharmacy and preclinical in-vivo testing.

The Parc is a joint initiative of Zentiva, University of Chemistry and Technology, Charles University and the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, whose aim is to foster industry-academia collaboration and the education of PhD students in pharmaceutical sciences. Prof. Štěpánek is the Scientific Director of The Parc.

Who are we?

We are a professional EPC contractor that provides comprehensive design services. We produce designs for all stages of a project from the basic design, through the detail design, to the as-built. We also supply process equipment and package units including installation, construction and commissioning involving mechanical completion, commissioning, and performance test. We also provide project management during plant erection. The principal business area of CASALE PROJECT a.s. is the segment of nitrogen fertilizers based on the process know-how of our affiliate company CASALE SA (Switzerland).

Employment of graduates in our company

A lot of graduates of the Department of Chemical Engineering UCT Prague already work in our company and their skills are proven in our process division. In case of interest, it is possible, after getting of adequate experience, to switch into the project department to become a project manager.

Work in process division includes:

  • Design and sizing of equipment or piping applying simulation software UniSim Design or HTRI
  • Supply of process data into instrumentation datasheets
  • Developing of process design documentation involving design basis, process description, heat and mass balances, raw material consumption, effluents and emissions, process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams, manuals
  • Participation at start-up of the designed unit, training of client operators
  • Preparation of materials and reports in the area of health, safety and environment

Our cooperation with Department of Chemical Engineering UCT Prague

We managed to establish a long-term and successful cooperation with the Department of Chemical Engineering at UCT Prague. Within the subject Process Engineering and Design, we annually prepare a lecture describing the run of a commercial project of the construction of a chemical unit and introducing the role of a process engineer in all stages of such project. We also assign a task for Process project of students, in which students try to apply their knowledge in a real industrial problem. If it is necessary, we are always ready to support students during the elaboration of their Process project.

The Student Scientific Conference (SVK) takes place at UCT Prague every year in November. Bachelor and master degree students present the results of their research work. At the Faculty of Chemical Engineering, the works are divided into several sections according to the specialization, each competitor presents their work to a professional committee in the form of a short lecture. It has become a tradition that, in addition to the evaluation of contributions by commissions composed of teachers of the ICT Prague, students' work is evaluated and appreciated (by material or monetary prizes) by representatives of the industrial sphere. Part of the competition day is also a presentation of the members of the evaluation committee and a presentation of the sponsoring company, which can address the students for later cooperation. A great benefit of this event is the coordination of interests or cooperation between academia and industry.
